Full description

Gardens of uncertain but possibly C16 origin, with development and extension from the mid-C19. Area of 4.8ha. The ground is hilly and slopes generally to the east to the estuary of the River Tamar. Wooded ground from the ENE round to the south. Garden activity is uncertain before the mid-C19. The present outline of the gardens was probably formed after the restoration of the house c1862. Three formal terraces to the east of the house, with a tunnel to the upper part of the valley garden, overlooking connected contour paths leading down to views over the Tamar. At the upper end of the valley is a pool to the north of the dovecote, thought to be a medieval stewpond. The valley is densely wooded with thinning for individual trees and shrubs to the west, and water-loving plants by pools. To the south of the house, the bowling green overlooks the drive. To the south and west, on rising ground, is the orchard. To the NW, the upper garden, with meadow and lawn round a square pool. The garden is Listed Grade II* (EH Parks and Gardens Register).
