Full description

Pleasure gardens extending from c. Sw 8220 3199 - sw 8233 3168, along the sw slopes of pendennis point, were probably laid out for the use of officers from pendennis castle in the 18thc.

During the late 18th or the first part of the 19th century the Government undertook to look after soldiers who had given long and good service or who had shown particular bravery, in perpetuity, in an attempt to encourage recruitment to the services. The legacy of this policy was for every garrison to have a company of invalids living alongside the regular soldiers. During the peace of the 20s and 30s, quite often only the invalid artillery under a Master Gunner remained to maintain the guns of the fortification and pensioners were put to work under successive Lieutenant Governors as the fortress guard.

Lieutenant Governor Melville allocated an area of ground on a group of fields around the wooden hospital for invalids and pensioners and their families to occupy "at a small rent or acknowledgement," where they could plant gardens and build cottages from which they could live in relative comfort. The hospital well almost certainly provided a focus for this community.

This area was still known as Hospital Meadow long after the hospital and old soldiers had disappeared. Part of the area is now locally known as Melville Gardens, almost certainly a historical name referring to Governor Melville's soldiers' plots (22).

Christian lilly's map of 1715 shows a number of small enclosures in the centre of this area, indicating that at least some of the gardens had been laid out by this time (b2). Other gardens are recorded to the e (see prn 18709.56).
