Full description

A well preserved single storey dwelling survives in the centre of Mill Farm settlement (33244). It is recorded roofed on the 1834, 1842, and 1876 maps (b3-b5). Planned at 1:500 by CCRA/NT in 1982 (h1, b6-b8) and visited by Herring in 1986 (h2, b9). It is entered from the south through the door slightly west of the centre. Two windows in the north wall are both splayed. Fireplace built against the west gable wall; structurally secondary, not tied into wall. Two fireplace jambs with traces of whitewash. Likely to have partition wall, now removed, possibly wood rather than stone (b9). The west gable is intact, approx 2.8m high, had coping, now removed. This has been buttressed by a large stone angled at the base of the interior (b9). No tare and feather splitting in the house. Broad and narrow work on the quoins may suggest a C17 date, as might the coping and the secondary chimney, suggestive of an early open centrally placed hearth (b9).
