Full description

The settlement of Cargoll is first recorded in the Domesday survey of 1086 when it is spelt "Cargau" (b1, b2). The name is Cornish, and possibly contains elements kew meaning 'hollow, enclosure', and -yel an adjectival suffix of uncertain meaning (b3). The Domesday entry records Cargoll as a substantial manor, held by the Count of Mortain from St Petroc. Land for 15 ploughs is mentioned, 4 acres of woodland, pasture 2 leagues long and 2 leagues wide, and a mill (25051). The great extent of the manor is confirmed in later documents (25049.2). From the Count of Mortain, Cargoll passed by grant to the Vallefort family; and in 1269 it was purchased by Bishop Bronescombe (of Exeter) from Roger Vallefort with the consent of the overlord, the Prior of Bodmin (see 25049.2) (b4).
