Full description

Sheer's Barton, as shown on the OS map of 1963, is the former site of a Bishop's Palace. The manor of Lawhitton was given by Edward the Elder to the bishop of Crediton c905. The bishoprics of Crediton and Exeter were united in 1402 and transferred to Exeter. A building was erected in Lawhitton to provide the visiting bishops with a summer residence c1106, and was held on lease from the bishops (b1, b2, b3). The White House also stands on the site (b4). The site is listed by King and Sheppard in 1973 (b5).
