Full description

The settlement at Cargoll is of early Medieval origin, and is first recorded in the Domesday survey, dating to 1086, when it is spelt ‘Cargau’ (1, 2). The name is Cornish, and possibly contains elements kew meaning 'hollow, enclosure', and -yel an adjectival suffix of uncertain meaning (3).

At the time of Domesday the manor was held by the Count of Mortain from St Petroc, and from whom it passed to the Vallefort family. In 1269 it was purchased by Bishop Bronescombe of Exeter from Roger Vallefort, and during the C13-C14 an important residence was established here and the Bishops frequently stayed at the manor, which had an associated fair and market (4, 5). In the early C18 Tonkin describes how the settlement was by that time only a ‘three or four poor houses’ (6).

The land was then sold to Richard Hawkins in 1804 through the Land Tax Redemption Act (7).
