Full description

The settlement of Lanherne is first recorded in the Domesday survey of 1086 (b1). The name is Cornish and contains the element lann meaning 'enclosed cemetery' and an uncertain second element (b2). The name lann indicates a settlement and estate of probable ecclesiastical origin (possibly centred on St Mawgan church) which however had been secularised by the time of Domesday (b3). From the C13 Lanherne was the seat of the Arundell family (b4) (Preston-Jones, A, 1989, pers comm).
