Full description
The settlement of Mawgan is first recorded in the Domesday survey of 1086 when it is spelt "Scanctus Mawan" (b1). The Domesday entry records the land belonging to King William and held by Britric, amounting to 1 hide (b3). The name is Cornish and contains the name of a Cornish saint (b2). Mawgan is recorded on the modern OS Mastermap 2007 and from the mapping Mawgan has grown into a village, including Mawgan Cross to the SW of the church.
