Full description
The tiny hamlet associated with Bosigran corn mills (30705) is now ruined. It is on the slopes above the Porthmeor stream and was planned at 1:500 by CCRA/NT in 1982 (h1, b6-b8). Field visit by Herring in 1986 (h2, b9). Likely to have origins in the early C17 at the latest; Bosigran mills referred to as "late nowe erected" in 1627 (b1) and a block of land, presumably that in which the settlement was created, was noted in 1662 (b2). C19 maps (b3-b5) document the settlement's growth (see b9 for details). There are remains of two single story dwellings or cabins (33244.01, 33244.02) four enclosures (33244.03), three outbuildings (33244.04 - 33244.06) with standng walls, the low banks of a ruined outhouse (33244.07), two rectangular rick-plats, with stone edgings, a garden (33244.08), a mowhay (33244.09), a bee hole (33244.10) built into a hedge and a hedged-in access lane (33244.11) (b9). One of the two houses (33244.02) may be C17 in origin, contemporary with the mill, and certain other features on the site, the other house, the enclosures, the bee-hole and the lane may be equally early. If so, this site is very important for its vernacular architecture; a rare survival of the humblest housing from pre-C19 West Cornwall (b9). The settlement is visible on air photographs (p1, p2) and was plotted for the NMP.
