Full description

On the summit and slopes of Chapel Carn Brea lies a group of ten barrows. Of these, six are prominent certain prehistoric structures while the other four are mounds traced during fieldwork (h3) which appear to represent barrows. The barrow group appears to have originated in the Neolithic period and comprises a long cairn built against a natural outcrop (16087), a probable entrance grave beneath the cairn on the summit (16073.03) and a possible entrance grave on the lower north slopes (16073.04). During the Bronze Age a round barrow group was developed, most surviving examples having traces of cists or kerbs. It is probable that at this time the summit cairn was greatly enlarged and secondary cist burials were added. Most of the barrows were plundered in antiquity. The summit barrow was excavated by WC Borlase in 1879 and barrow 16073.01 was examined in 1907. None of the barrows have received any modern investigation, consequently the development of individual sites are poorly understood (b4).
