Full description

An exceptionally well preserved and clearly defined settlement and associated field system comprising at least forty-four round houses and other small structures occupying approximately 21 hectares on a gently sloping south-west facing hillslope between 285m and 310m above OD. First shown on the OS map of 1962, surveyed by Fletcher in 1973. Re-surveyed by Quinnell in 1976 and plotted by the RCHM at 1:2500.
The settlement appears to be deliberately sited in an area which is covered by a dense spread of clitter whilst the surrounding unenclosed moorland pasture is relatively stone free. The two nucleated round house groups centred at SX 1815 8005 and SX 1840 8000 appear to represent the original foundation, with individual houses and an outward spread of fields subsequently added to cover an area of some 21 hectares. Two other possible nucleated house groups are located at SX 1810 8020 and SX 1845 8005. The northern group lies in an irregular boulder strewn enclosure where the houses are free-standing, whilst those in the southern group are mostly linked to or incorporated within the field walling.
Diameters of the houses range from 3.7m to 8.7m and the walling varies in construction from low turf covered stony banks to substantial double faced slab walls filled with small stone and incorporating a few tall upright slabs. The average height of the surviving walls is around 0.6m. Entrances are aligned to the south-west, south-east or north-west. Some of the houses have annexes or corridors and at least two have probable chambers in the walls.
The field system associated with the settlement covers an area of some 21 hectares; fields range in size from 0.2ha to 1.0ha. The majority of the walls are linear heaps or banks of boulders and stone with some upright slabs ranging from 0.6m to 2.0m in width and from 0.4m to 1.2m in height. There are numerous entrance gaps to the fields, some original, others more recent; the northern enclosure has a very fine simple entrance at SX 1806 8007. The fields are accretive. There is a slight lynchetting of soil against the walls of the most easterly of the fields.
A cist (3159.6) lies on one of the partially stripped out field walls and five small stony mounds, possibly burial cairns occur mostly on the southern side of the field system (3159).
