Full description

Hirst records a field system associated with the courtyard house (30756.1) at Chykembro and notes a large hut circle (30756.9) (b1). Russell in 1971 lists the extant remains of a field system (b2). The OS who visited the site in 1975 record that little survives of the Celtic field system which probably once covered the hillslopes to the north of Gear Common. The present field system has been superimposed onto the old one and although some very small fields with 0.5m high field banks are identifiable on the upper hillslopes, the majority have been effaced. The field system is visible on air photos (h1, p1-p4). Weatherhill in 1982 describes the fragmented remains of a large field system covering 35ha (h2, b3). The boundaries visible on air photographs were plotted for the NMP in 1997.
