Full description

WC Borlase records the remains of a barrow 182m north-west of Boskednan stone circle (30684) (b3) which is possibly that mentioned by Borlase in 1740 as containing a cist (30689.1) (b1). Russell in 1971 lists the extant remains of a mound with some walling stones (b4). The OS surveyed the site at 1:2500 in 1975 and recorded a barrow up to 1.3m high, 14m overall in diameter, but with part of a retaining circle 10m in diameter. There is a central excavation pit and between this and the western edge is a flat stone which may be the capstone of a cist (h1). Sketch survey at 1:2500 by Gerrard in 1985 recorded the inner stones tilting inwards (h2, b5, b6).
The site is covered with some gorse and heather around the perimeter but the top is cleared once a year by CASPN and so is now rough grass and thin bracken (pers comm: AP-J, 2010).
