Full description

Henderson (b1) quotes Leland as stating that the Cornish diocese, was set up around 926 AD, by King Athelstan. He chose Conan to be the first bishop and was given St Germans as his cathedral. Padel (b16) confirms that the diocese was set up because a document endowing the bishopric was recently discovered by a Mr Picken. He also adds that the date could be earlier. In 1042, the Cornish seat was united with Crediton, and St Germans lost its diocesan status (b8).
