Full description
The great window facing outwards from the castle was blocked with masonry and a C17 gun emplacement was built in the Civil War. The castle was held by Parliament against the Royalists in the Civil War, but Sir Richard Grenville captured the castle after only a few days siege. The encounter involved some loss of life: workmen in the C18 found two armour-clad skeletons in the castle's dungeons (b17).
