Full description

On the densely overgrown south facing moorland slopes of Chapel Carn Brea are the remains of a barrow first recorded on the 1906 OS map (b1). Partly excavated by King and Polkinghorne in 1907 who showed that the site contained a stone-lined cist which was sealed by a capstone and which contained earth, a cremation urn and three flint flakes (h2, b2, b3, b6, b7). Another incomplete urn was found on the western edge of the site away from the cist. The cist was found within a mound of stone and earth and part of a retaining wall was uncovered (b8). The site was surveyed by the OS in 1960 (h3) who supply most up to date details, since Gerrard's sketch survey of the area in 1985 added no further information (h4, b9, b10). The OS record a very disturbed granite rubble and granite mound of 0.7m high and 7.0m in diameter. There were no remains of a cist only a displaced granite slab or capstone measuring 1.8m by 1.2m and 0.4m thick (h3). The site is overgrown and forms part of a barrow group (16073). Revisited by the OS in 1985 who add that the kerb lies only on the west of the site consisting of five contiguous slabs and blocks 0.3m high (h5). The barrow is visible on aerial photographs (p1,2,3) as a low earth mound and was plotted as part of the NMP.
