Full description

In the early C20 Henderson recorded a barrow on the SSE slopes of Chapel Carn Brea (b1). The grid reference given by Russell is SW 3860 2805 (b2). In 1985 the area was sketch surveyed by Gerrard for CAU and the traces of a barrow were noted at SW 3862 2805. It was recorded as a small disturbed and overgrown barrow approx 8.0m diameter; the height was not recorded. It has part of a retaining wall encircling a mound containing a central cist (h1). Further fieldwork by CAU failed to trace this feature at either Russell's or Gerrard's locations. The former location is immediately south east of Chapel Carn Brea summit cairn in an area obliterated by modern features (post-wartime demolition and the Old Cornwall Society's bonfire site). There was no trace of the barrow in the area indicated by Gerrard: this part of the hill has natural breaks in slope and a few outcropping boulders (h2, b7).
