Full description
A group of early industrial granite quarries located on the south slopes of Kit Hill, with an associated hollow-way leading from the quarries to the SE. All were surveyed as part of the CAU Kit Hill field survey (h1). All three quarries are marked as "old" on the 1st Edition OS (b1). They were probably abandoned due to the difficulty of removing granite on a large scale from these sites, whilst on the north slopes, quarrying activity was allowed to develop due to the opening of the East Cornwall Mineral Railway. All quarries show a progression of working, deepening in the southern parts, leaving earlier levels isolated. Full details are given in the Kit Hill survey report (b2). The quarries are visible on air photographs (p1) and were plotted as part of the NMP.
