Full description

A barrow was noted by Halliwell in the mid-C19 (b1). Henderson described it as a well preserved ring barrow, known as Carn Clough. Its diameter was recorded as 24ft (7.34m) and eleven contiuous stones of the circle, inclined at an angle of 60 degrees towards the centre were visible. Within the circle a side stone and part of a covering stone of a cist survived (b2). Survey by the OS in 1961 revealed that the barrow is in similar condition to when Henderson visited it. The retaining stones, eleven contigious and one isolated, average 0.8m high. They are shown in Henderson's plan. The cover stone of the cist is now parallel to the side stone and is partly buried. The interior and unretained perimeter is made up of small stones and earth to a maximum height of 0.4m (h1, p1). This site should be examined with a view to Scheduling (b4). The site is visible on air photographs (p1) and was plotted for the NMP.
