Name:PENDENNIS - Post Medieval gatehouse

Summary

The form of the Elizabethan entrance gate is shown by Norden in his view of 1610. It comprises an arched passage through the rampart from which project the arms of a counter-balanced drawbridge. Opposite this entrance, against the counterscarp is a fixed section of bridge which terminates in a freestanding entrance arch with a semi-circular entablature containing a panel in the tympanum, perhaps for an achievement of arms.

Full description

The form of the Elizabethan entrance gate is shown by Norden in his view of 1610. It comprises an arched passage through the rampart from which project the arms of a counter-balanced drawbridge. Opposite this entrance, against the counterscarp is a fixed section of bridge which terminates in a freestanding entrance arch with a semi-circular entablature containing a panel in the tympanum, perhaps for an achievement of arms (21).

Norden's drawing of pendennis castle in 1728 shows the original gatehouse of the elizabethan fortress (b3), which would have been smaller than the present structure (b18). The gatehouse was rebuilt in the late 17thc (see prn 18709.51).
