Full description

The present gatehouse at pendennis castle, replacing the elizabethan gate (see prn 18709.32), Was built in the 17thc, after the civil war (b18).

A plan, thought to date to 1700 showing alterations proposed to the Civil War outworks, does not show a freestanding arch. The gate in the rampart would appear in plan to be the building which survives today with barracks projecting from behind. The sentinel-like guard barracks which flank the slope up into the parade are almost certainly contemporaneous with the gate, their expressed quoins, plinths and cornice echoing the restrained classicism of the gateway. If the gate and barracks are late C17 in origin then they are the first purpose built barracks in the United Kingdom.

In 1715 Lilly calls it the 'chief entrance'. A small building over the gate is shown by the Buck brothers in their view of 1734. A drawing of 1743 prepared to address a problem with damp in the guard barracks shows three masonry trestles supporting a wooden bridge the last span of which was probably openable. An oblique plan prepared in 1762 shows the barracks and gate for the first time on 3/4 view confirming that what survives today is certainly what existed then.

A painting by William Daniell made in 1826 shows the gate in profile. The building behind the pediemnt looks almost exactly as it does today (21).
