Full description

A two-storey storehouse was built inside the gate of pendennis castle in the late C18 or early C19; it was used as a hospital in the mid C19, and subsequently as a recreational building for reserve soldiers (b18). Subsequently known as 'Storehouse C'.

The 1866 plan describes Storehouse C as hospital, kitchen and scullery. The storehouse was converted, probably in the early years of the C20, when barrack reform was particularly prevalent, to serve as a soldiers' canteen and bar with billiard room. The conversion, judging from the plans of the 1930s, would appear to have involved some further sub-division internally and the addition of a service tower at the rear containing four WCs. It continued in this role through World War One, but was superseded by a more voluminious NAAFI during World War Two in nissen huts to the east.

In 1969 the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works removed the chimneys and fireplaces relating to the building's conversion to a hospital and stripped out the C20 alterations completely. The original slate hanging was also stripped off during these works. The building was subsequently converted to mount an exhibition of arms and armour and today also houses the English Heritage shop and an introductory exhibition (21).
