Full description

A group of 3 buildings were constructed inland of middle point battery.

The Searchlight Battery providing the illuminated area for the 6-pdr twin quick-fire battery at Middle Point became operational on 18 November 1941. The power for the searchlights was provided by two engine rooms set into the steep coastal slope above Castle Drive. They flanked an oil store at a slightly higher level containing four 600 gallon oil tanks. Oil was fed to the engine rooms by gravity and thence pumped by hand to individual fuel tanks on the engine room walls serving each of the machines. Engine room A to the north housed four 22 kW Lister engines powering lights Nos 1-4 and a 5 kW Lister engine for the battery
incandescent lighting and the current to the fan and barrel circuits on the fixed projectors (ie the Defence Lights.) Engine room B to the south housed one 22 kW Lister engine powering searchlight No 5. A 6-pdr anti-tank gun manned by personnel of 442 Battery was sited on the roof of engine room A by November 1943
to defend the approach along Castle Drive.

Engine rooms A and B were connected with MOON engine room at Pendennis Point and could supply each other in the event that one installation was put out of action. The entrances to the engine rooms and oil store were bricked up in 1957, however, access has been forced to both buildings through the louvred exhaust vents on the roof and it is possible that their interior condition may have been compromised by vandalism (21).
