Full description

Henderson records an extensive deer park at Merthen, emparked before 1500, and eclosing an area of 79 acres in 1590 (b1, b2). The OS in 1971 found that the ditch is largely traceable over almost its complete extent where it borders the wood. It is generally well defined and reaches a depth of 1.4m in places. The bank is less substantial than might be expected for a pale, but if topped by a palisade would have presented a substantial barrier. Although untraceable beyond the edge of the woodland, if the area of 79 acres was correct it may well have extended to enclose the field to the north of Merthen earthworks (24589) and a field to the west of this field, a total area of about 80 acres. It is delineated on the OS 6-inch map (h1, b3).
