Full description
Excavations of the defences on the east side of Nanstallon Roman fort revealed that they are turf revetted ramparts, with an external ditch with a v-shaped profile, 2.5m wide and 1.5m deep. The rampart was 3.7m wide at the south-east and north-east corners. Post pits for angle towers were found. One pit showed signs that one of the timbers hads been pulled out diagonally from the rampart (probably during evacuation of the fort), leaving a rotted broken section behind (h1, b1).
