Full description
Sections of metalled roadway were uncovered during excavations at Nanstallon Roman fort. The 'via principalis' was uncovered at the east gate and its south edge was traced to its junction with the 'via decumana'. It had no kerbstones and the surface had been eroded and spread by ploughing. The 'via decumana' consisted of a bedding of small sandstone slabs covered with light metalling. A rampart road, the 'via sagularis', was located 3m behind the rampart - metalling was 0.3m thick and the roadway 2.4m wide. Finds included a brooch, knife and sherds of coarseware. A cooking area with clay field ovens was discovered behind the rampart (h1, b1).
