Full description
The headquarters building (principia) of Nanstallon Roman fort was sited on the highest point within the fort, on rocky soil heavily eroded by ploughing. It faced onto the via principalis and postholes indicated it had an open colonnaded front or portico, but with foundations for small rooms at either end. Remains of demolition fires when the fort was evacuated were identified. The building is a characteristic pre-Flavian courtyard design (h1, b1).
