Full description
At Nanstallon Roman fort the commander's house was built close to the principia on its eastern side. Timbers were nearly all set in foundation trenches and sill beams were used for two partition walls. The floor levels had been plouged away. The main feature of the house was a room 9.5m long and 6.1m wide at the rear. On the west side was a range of small rooms interpreted as private quarters and offices. The east range contained service quarters including bedrooms and kitchen. Adjoining this building was an enclosed space interpreteed as a compound (h1, b1).
