Full description

Evidence of metal working was found at Nanstallon Roman fort. A charcoal hearth was discovered, with pieces of crucible scattered around it, one with a droplet of silver slag adhering. A half ounce inscribed weight and a cylindrical make weight also support the evidence for precious metal working. Burnt material was found in foundation trenches pre - dating barrack block IV. Some iron samples from the site hint at attempts at smelting (h1, b1).
