Full description
The wheelpit of Porthmoina mill (30793) was planned at 1:200 by the National Trust in 1984 (h3, b8 - 11). It is stone lined, open at its west end and 9.2m long, 0.6m wide. Bearing stones survive on the outside wall whose inner stonework also has wear scars. It is at the south end of the stamping mill whose south gable wall was built as a splash sheild enclosing the shape of the wheel; this prevented water being carried by the wheels buckets being taken by the wind onto the settling tanks. An axle hole survives. The walling was recently re - pointed in 1987. The tail race is not visible but presumably ran from the open west end (b11).
