Full description

A level platform immediately east of Portmoina Mill was noted by Mercer in 1969 (h1) and planned at 1:200 by the National Trust in 1984 (h3, b8 - 11). It is revetted with very large stones along its west side and is separated from the mill by a narrow platform 2.5m wide from which the spalled, or broken down ore was fed by chutes into the mill. The platform is now covered with shallow soil and grass and was probably originally paved or cobbled. It is circa 19m N-S by a maximum of 8m E-W. A flight of granite steps lead down from it into the south end of the mill (b11).
