Full description
Gundry Cave is a cairn situated on the summit of Trewey Hill (b4). It was first noted by Edmunds in the mid C19, who described it as "a barrow 100 ft (30.48m) in circumference, raised on a natural cairn" (b1). Henderson wrote "a great part of the interior of the mound and the cist which it probably contained have been removed. A circle of stones, set on edge surrounds the base of the mound. Two large slabs 6ft (1.83m) long and 5 ft (1.52m) high, do not seem to occupy their original positions and may be the side stones of a cist" (b2). Gundry Cave has been surveyed by the OS. It consists of earth piled on a natural rock and has a maximum height of 2.3m. There are four stones of a retaining circle in situ, in addition to the two large slabs mentioned by Henderson, which may have been displaced from the circle or which may have been part of a cist. A pit has been dug into the barrow from the south east side, the resultant hollow has its north west and south east sides lined by a natural rock meeting at right angles. This rock may have been utilised as two sides of the cist (h1). Mercer suggests that the interior of the mound may have held "a chamber of entrance grave type" but this appears less possible than the OS interpretation (h2). Russell records it as barrow 12 (Zennor) although she gives an incorrect grid reference (SW 4588 3771); see 31497. She notes that the retaining wall incorporates natural rocks (b3). Gerrard, during a 1:2500 sketch survey in 1985, records a small dump, possibly made by the robbers, to the south of the barrow (h6, b5, b6). The monument is included in the Schedule.
