Full description

Well preserved shell of a single story dwelling in the south east of Mill Farm settlement (33244). Shown roofed on the 1834, 1842 and 1876 maps (b3-b5). Planned at 1:500 by CCRA/NT in 1982 (h1, b6-b8) and visited by Herring in 1986 (h2, b9). Divided into two cells by a masonry wall and has a chimney in the north gable wall. The building is slightly trapezoidal: internally 2.95m wide at the north end, 3.15m wide at the south end. The north room is 4.45m long and the south room 3.7m long. The entrance was originally through the north of the long west wall; now blocked and replaced by another, still open, to its south. Fireplace is the north wall is now blocked; and the lintel on built jambs. The external buttress chimney has collapsed bringing down the top of the gable. The windows in the north and east walls of the north room are blocked up. The south room has no fireplace and no windows and was entered from the north room. A possible blocked door survives in the west wall (b9). A gable shape survives in the 1.95m high partition wall. It is possible that the south room was meant for animals, there being no fireplace and no windows. If so the direct access from the north room would make it a single and very late long house (b9). There are no tare and feather split stones; a pre-1800 date is therefore more likely (b9).
