Full description

Located between the St Ives - St Just road (B3306) and the Bosigran field system are the overgrown remains of a steam-powered stamping mill. It was built in 1872 by G Eustace of Hayle and operated by a Husband's pneumatic two headed stamps, specially made by Harveys of Hayle to a revolutionary new design capable of 140 strokes a minute. It was powered by a nine-inch and seventeen-inch horizontal compound engine (b1).
The site is shown on the OS 1st Edition 25" map of c1880 and was planned by CAU and the NT at 1:200 in 1982 (h1). There was an engine house (33245.1) uphill to the west of the dressing floor (33245.2) and a reservoir, for the boiler and for dressing, uphill to the west of the site, fed by leat (33245.3). The remains of these features still survive (1986) overwhelmed by willow and thorn bushes (b6) The remains of prospecting pits, two buildings, a leat and the reservoir mentioned above, is visible on aerial photographs (p1-3) and was plotted by the NMP.
