Full description

Well preserved remains of a mid C19 water powered tin stamping mill. Built in 1861 to replace 33246 (to the south) (b3). By 1864 it had been expanded to include three water wheels (33247.1 - 33247.3) (b1), all recorded on the 1st Edition 1:2500 OS map 1876 OS map (b2). This map also records the disposition of the main tanks and round buddles on the two dressing floors (33247.4-5) as well as the leat (33247.6), calciner and stack (33247.7), and a reservoir (33247.8) serving the top dressing floor (b2). The site was planned at 1:200 by the National Trust in 1982 (h1, b4-6) and was visited in 1986 by Herring (h2, b7). The northern wheelpit (33247.3) clearly serves a second stamping mill (33247.9) to which the northern dressing floor (33247.5) belongs. A leat on a massive bastion (33247.1) brought water to the northern stamps wheelpit. Both stamping mills have spalling floors (33247.11 and 33247.12) for hand breaking the ore. The stamping mill was built on the site of Bosigran grist mill (30705) and served Carn Galver mine (33236). The complex of buildings, processing area, reservoir, leat, and stack are all visible on air photographs (p1) and was plotted for the NMP
