Full description

Part of a cairn group (1970), this cairn is situated on the crest of a boulder covered moorland ridge. It was originally recorded as a hut circle (b1) and Scheduled as such in 1973 (h1), but the OS fieldworker (h2, b2) found a mutilated turf covered cairn, 10m diameter and up to 0.6m high, with a retaining circle of stones which give the appearance of a hut circle. In the 1980s the site was surveyed from the air and on the ground by the RCHM (h3, h4, b3). According to the latter, it comprises a ragged turf covered mound, which incorporates an incomplete kerb of upright slabs, the talllest of which is 1.1m high. The overall dimensions of 7.2m by 6.9m are less than those recorded by the OS fieldworker. The RCHM say much of the centre and north west side of the mound have been robbed. The kerb is approximately 4.4m in diameter and the cairn material may originally have been contained within these upright slabs (h3).
