Full description

Part of a cairn group (1970), this cairn is situated on a broad ridge of unenclosed moorland, in an inconspicuous position. It was originally recorded as a hut circle (b1, b2, b4) and in the 1970s was Scheduled as such (h1), but in 1973 the OS fieldworker (h2, b2) identified it as the turf covered remains of a cairn. In the 1980s the cairn was surveyed from the air and on the ground by the RCHM (h3, h4, b5). According to the latter it is circular, 11.7m in diameter, and composed of small stones (mostly 0.2m across). The mound is 0.2m to 0.4m high (but excavation material is piled to a height of 0.7m) and 1.7m within the perimeter the tops of three small upright slabs protrude and may represent the remains of an open kerb. The condition of this cairn is poor; the interior has been dug over and the south eastern half gutted to ground level and below (h4).
