Full description

A bridge over the Bude Canal is situated in Haunch Wood. It is a shallow stone arch with stone walls. A tow path runs under the bridge on its eastern side leaving a 1.8m wide passage for barges. In 1989 EH listed the structure and described it as a circa 1823 stone rubble with dressed stone arch road bridge. The bridge was built over the Bude canal and adjoining towpath for a farm track which has now been partly ploughed over. The towpath, constructed of stone rubble is almost as wide as the narrow canal. The bridge has an ellipitical arch of dressed stone and stone rubble parapets which are splayed over the abutments. There are few surviving remains of the Bude canal (1823-1891) and this bridge clearly illustrates the width and nature of the canal. There are the remains of two culverts to the north and south of Haunch Bridge (1).
