Full description
Saltash Station was opened on 4th May 1859 as the first station in Cornwall on the Cornwall Railway, which later became the GWR main line from Plymouth to Penzance. The station was rebuilt in 1880 and all of the original CR structures were removed. Further extensions to the platforms and buildings took place in 1906. During the first half of the C20 Saltash had an intensive service of suburban trains, and was for many years the busiest station in Cornwall. This traffic dwindled with the opening of the Tamar road bridge in 1961, and the station was unstaffed by 1971. Goods traffic ceased in 1963. The signal box was closed in 1973 and subsequently demolished, and only the 1880/1906 main building survives on the up side.
