Full description
A number of exposed human bones were reported to the police by a member of the public just above Pentireglaze Haven beach in 2005.
Excavation revealed that a human burial had been placed within a grave cut aligned approximately west-east but that erosion of the cliff had resulted in the loss of the upper half of the skeleton. Three copper alloy buttons were recovered from the grave, one from the pelvic area, one found next to the left knee and another from the base of the grave cut; these suggest an eighteenth century date. Another suspected burial was indicated by an adjacent area of erosion and investigated, but no bones were found. Osteological analysis of the bone suggests that the burial was that of a middle aged man, probably of non-north European descent. Pathological conditions are thought consistent with those that could be present in a mariner.
