Full description

A unique cast iron fingerpost survives on the northern side of Yeolm Bridge, Yeolmbridge. The pillar is tapered round in plan with YEOLMBRIDGE in raised vertical capital letters making this fingerpost specific to Yeolmbridge. Just below the two arms there is a mid pillar ring the profile of which is not presently known. The arms appear to be sleeve mounted although they could be fixed using a flange. There appears to be ‘spacers’ between the two arms and between the top arm and where the finial would have been located. The arms are rectangular raised edge with 45 degree raised ‘triangle’ infill detail with the top arm recording BUDE and the bottom arm recording LAUNCESTON. The lack of distance suggests an early fingerpost, although the fingerpost is not recorded on either the 1st or 2nd Edition 1:2500 OS maps c1880 c1907 (1&2).
Livery all white with the exception of the raised lettering on the pillar together with the mid pillar ring, the raise edge lettering to the arms and the spacers between the arms and finial. The finial appears to be missing (Google Street View c2009).
