Full description

A wheel-headed cross and detached cross base, formerly situated close to Stithians Church (18231.1), shown on the OS 1908 and 1969 maps (b4, b7). Henderson notes it was moved to its present site c1860 (b6). The principal face displays a figure in relief with arms outstretched and legs together, enclosed by a bead. The figure is positioned directly above a circle containing an incised equal limbed cross. The circle is formed by a raised bead but the remainder of the shaft is plain. The reverse face displays a latin cross in relief with expanded ends to the limbs, the lower limb extending the full length of the shaft. The limbs of the cross have been formed by the cutting of triangular areas, which help to form a bead around the top of the head. The shaft has chamfered angles, suggesting a late example of a wheel-headed cross. The monument measures 2.01m in height, width of head 0.53m, width of shaft 0.355m and thickness 0,2m to 0.315m (b9). The IAM visiting the site in 1985 notes the base is crudely shaped, the mortise not sunk in the middle (h4).
