Full description
Norden shows a building to the northeast of the Henrician castle in 1600. It is a single storey courtyard building possibly functioning as a stables.
On a drawing thought to date to 1700 depicting proposals for altering the Hornworks only the east and north ranges are shown. Lilly in his survey of 1715 draws these two ranges with a broken line, an annotation commonly used to indicate redundancy or ruination. They form the corner of a large enclosure possibly for horsemanship or grazing of horses.
The buildings disappeared with the creation of the Governor's stables behind the eastern end of the land curtain a few years later. Part of the area was subsequently overlapped by a turning circle for cars in the early C20.
The area is sown with grass. Despite the later road, it is felt the area is relatively undisturbed by later use and is therefore of particular archaeological significance (1).
