Full description
Plans and sections dated 1853 "showing the additional work required preparatory to placing a 56-pdr gun on dwarf traversing platform in the salient", of Smithwick's Bastion were prepared by the Royal Engineers. They show a platform of rubble masonry laid into the existing cavalier and or this is placed a front pivot and racer for a traversing platform.
Comparison of the proposal with 1866 Ordnance Survey plans demonstrates that the work was carried out exactly as drawn. In addition, the latter survey shows a side arms shed, 'No 6', built against the existing revetment of the cavalier. Records indicate that the emplacement was for a 32 or 56-pdr gun.
An enclosed yard, perhaps an animal pen, is also shown on the 1866 survey against the east flank (1).
