HER Number:MCO62324
Name:PENDENNIS - C16 curtain

Summary

Curtain No. 1 lies between Smithwick's and Carrick Mount bastions. It is depicted by Norden in 1600 and 1610 as a simple parapet at the same height as the rest of the work with a continuous terreplain behind. Lilly's survey of 1715 suggests that the terreplain had been raised for the length of the curtain, probably to the height of the cavaliers in the bastions. Improvements to the land front during or just before the Civil War may account for this.
