Full description
Ordnance plans show a new road at a lower level to the C17 trackway. During the war with France, a branch was introduced just to the north-west of Smithwick's Bastion to serve a new hospital, and this continued to provide access to some of the old soldiers huts until the late 1840s.
The road was apparently in a poor condition by 1834, when the Governor applied to the Board to have it repaired. By June, correspondence records that the Governor had widened the road and created parapets.
Castle Road was named in 1863 to distinguish it from the new Castle Drive from which it formed a lesser branch (1).
