Summary

During World War Two, vehicular approach to the fort along Castle Road, at the order 'Stand to' was impeded by 'knife rests' outside the main gate and on Lower Castle Drive. Knife rests were pointed steel rails on frames slotted into pockets in the road surface to prevent free passage.

Full description

During World War Two, vehicular approach to the fort along Castle Road, at the order 'Stand to' was impeded by 'knife rests' outside the main gate and on Lower Castle Drive. Knife rests were pointed steel rails on frames slotted into pockets in the road surface to prevent free passage (1).
