Summary
The Elizabethan East Bastion, labelled 'C' by Norden on a plan of 1600, is shown with solid faces and pairs of embrasures in the flanks. Lilly's survey of 1715 calls it 'East Bastion', recording that it mounted a saker, a minion, a demi-culverin and a whole culverin. An unsigned plan of 1762 shows the paired embrasures in the flanks reduced to single ones.

Full description
The Elizabethan East Bastion, labelled 'C' by Norden on a plan of 1600, is shown with solid faces and pairs of embrasures in the flanks. Lilly's survey of 1715 calls it 'East Bastion', recording that it mounted a saker, a minion, a demi-culverin and a whole culverin. An unsigned plan of 1762 shows the paired embrasures in the flanks reduced to single ones.
Between 1788 and 1793 the parapet was rebuilt incorporating a cheval de fraise, a row of sharpened stakes projecting from the top of the escarp revetment.
The area is called 'Harbour Bastion' on the Ordnance Storekeeper's return on 1828 and by the 1840s it was called 'Bastion No 3' (1).
