Summary
In 1853, a scheme to mount a 56-pdr gun on a dwarf traversing platform was prepared by Colonel Nelson. It was probably designed by I Moggeridge, the signatory on the drawing accompanying a detailed estimate. Racers and pivots were simultaneously ordered by the Commander of Royal Artillery.

In 1853, a scheme to mount a 56-pdr gun on a dwarf traversing platform was prepared by Colonel Nelson. It was probably designed by I Moggeridge, the signatory on the drawing accompanying a detailed estimate. Racers and pivots were simultaneously ordered by the Commander of Royal Artillery.
The 1866 Ordnance Survey plan shows East Bastion, still called No. 3, altered exactly in line with the 1853 proposal. Embrasures on the flanks are still shown open with stone platforms and a side arms shed against the south flank (1).
