Full description

Two buildings with garden plots are shown on a plan of 1700 close to East Bastion and are identified by Lilly as 'gunners barracks', in his plan of 1715. Both buildings are again shown on plans of 1752.

An unsigned plan of 1762 describes the one closest to the curtain as 'Master Gunner's house', - a logical progression as the garrison diminished in the early C18 - and calls the one furthest from the bastion 'sutling house', from where camp followers would sell provisions to the garrison. When the castle was surveyed in 1793 only the Master Gunner's house remained. Elevations of the fort from the late 1840s show the house from the east and west.

The Master Gunner's house survived up to 1866 when the Ordnance Survey shows it with accretions housing a Royal Engineers store; coal house and Invalid Gunners' Quarters. A privy with two holes, a cess pit and a small garden is also shown.

Demolished prior to 1910 (1).
